iPhone Hysteria

Some say it was unwarranted, but the iPhone made history when it was released to the world Friday, June 29th. Within the same day, however, there were already complaints (such as this one) about the much-hyped gadget. Robert Scoble and his 13-year old son Patrick were the first to walk out of the Apple Store in Palo Alto with the iPhone in hand. Sadly, we Filipinos have to wait another 6 months before it is released here. Such is life, huh?

Meanwhile, watch the hilarious video below as shown on Conan. See if it makes you want the iPhone even more…

Hello Moto!

For the phone that I was going to “declare” for the office, I decided on a Motorola V6. Seeing as I had been a faithful Nokia user for over 10 years, I thought it would be fun to try a different brand this time around. Based on reviews on the net, most people found it great. It helped, too, that it was lightweight AND easy on the eyes:

I was supposed to have had a happy post about this about a month and a half ago but Globe Telecom washed all hopes of that down the drain. As their loyalty reward for my having been a subscriber for the past 6 years, they offered to give me a free phone, much like what happened with my SMART subscription. However, this “reward” turned out to be a nightmare!First off, they promised to deliver the new phone to my house within a week from their phone confirmation. Did this happen? No! After a week and some days without the expected deliver, I followed up with their customer service and only then did I find out that the unit was unavailable and they still did not know when the next shipment was coming in. Uh, care to run that by me again? So fine, I waited another 2 weeks before deciding to make another follow-up. Customer service then said there were already units available a week before but that the loyalty rewards unit may just have just missed out on my name. I was advised to await for the unit within one week (they said it took 5 working days for the request to be processed). The phone was finally delivered to my house late afternoon of May 10th. I only got to charge it in the evening and try it out the next day. Lo and behold, after initial start-up, the phone went dead – as in no lights, wouldn’t charge, no response at all! So I called it in again to complain. They advised me to bring it to the nearest service center as it was still within the 7-day warranty.

I wasn’t able to bring it in until Black Saturday (due to the observance of Holy Week) and the service center told me there were no units available (again!). They said they would just call me once there was a unit available. Not one call/text from anyone within one week so I decided to make another follow-up. I was already kinda pissed seeing as I was already being charged for a phone which I wasn’t even using yet so I let the person on the other end of the line feel how frustrated I was. I said if I didn’t get a replacement unit within a couple of days, I was going to cancel my subscription. That seemed to work as I got a call the next day saying I could come over to the service center and pick-up my replacement unit.

I went home with the new unit happily. After charging and testing it, I felt everything was as it should be. Unfortunately, that feeling did not last. During the weekend, my phone died again! It had the exact same symptoms as the first phone! Aaaargh! It was a good thing it happened on the last day of the warranty or else I would have had a bigger problem! So back I trooped to the service center to complain about it. Good thing they didn’t give me the song-and-dance routine I was expecting or that would have been the last straw. They immediately gave me another new unit which they said should be ok. They apologized and said it just so happened I got two lemons but that shouldn’t put me off Motorola entirely. Great start to a Motorola relationship, huh? I told the service rep to report the 2 units that were previously given to me as the shipment it may have belonged to may be a troublesome batch. Anyways, 2 weeks later, my phone is still working (thank God!) but I can’t keep feeling like it just might conk out on me again…If that happens, it’ll be “Goodbye Moto, Hello Nokia!” for me forever.
