Thursday Thirteen #2

Thirteen Pieces of Good Advice

Last week’s post kinda gave you an idea of the hours I clock in at the office. I am under so much stress that Mondays usually already make me look forward to the weekend. There is a saying, though, that if you don’t stop and smell the roses, life will just pass you by. And so, little by little, I am trying to wean myself from being irritable me to a person who knows how to value the little things in life. Here are a few tips that make a lot of sense and hopefully will keep me on the right track:

1. Accept that some days you’re the pigeon, and some days you’re the statue.
2. Always keep your words soft and sweet, just in case you have to eat them.
3. Always read stuff that will make you look good if you die in the middle of it.
4. Drive carefully. It’s not only cars that can be recalled by their maker.
5. It may be that your sole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.
6. Never put both feet in your mouth at the same time, because then you won’t have a leg to stand on.
7. Since it’s the early worm that gets eaten by the bird, sleep late.
8. The second mouse gets the cheese.
9. When everything’s coming your way, you’re in the wrong lane.
10. Some mistakes are too much fun to only make once.
11. We could learn a lot from crayons. Some are sharp, some are pretty and some are dull. Some have weird names, and all are different colors, but they all have to live in the same box.
12. A truly happy person is one who can enjoy the scenery on a detour.

13. Nobody cares if you can’t dance well. Just get up and dance.

Ubiquitous Quiz Thursday 40

Your Dosha is Pitta

You have a quick mind, a gift for persuasion, and a sharp sense of humor.
You have both the drive and people skills to be a very successful leader.
Argumentative and a bit stubborn, you have been known to be a little too set in your ways.
But while you may be biased toward your own point of view, you are always honest, fair, and ethical.

With friends: You are outgoing and open to anyone who might want to talk to you

In love: You are picky but passionate

To achieve more balance: Be less judgmental of those around you, and take cool walks in the moonlight.

Lilypad Spotlight 25: Maldita, Bratinella

Fiddle-dee-dee…where to start, where to start…

This week’s roomie is a fellow Filipina. She is a pretty 23-year old with an ass-kicking bio. Jen is so talented she even custom-designs really rockin’ blog templates in her spare time. What I like about her posts is that they’re short and straight to the point, smart and sassy just like her title. A lot of her entries will give you a glimpse of what’s really inside her heart. Dare I say that she is currently in a contemplative mood? Lol! Jen is also a generous soul – imagine giving away 100 credits to the 5th, 10th, 15th & 20th commenter to click and comment on her tenant’s blog! (I even queued up for the chance to be HER tenant – hahaha!)

Beautiful, bright and a giver – definitely one lethal combination, huh? So, whachadoin’ hanging around here for? Hop on over to her lilypad and give her a ribbit from me – pronto!

Donate Hair, Save The Ocean

It has been two weeks since the most destructive oil spill ever to hit our country, and yet we haven’t made any decent progress in controlling it. Meanwhile, we have no idea how much damage it has done to our much-vaunted marine ecosystem and carefree coastal life. Yeah, Greenpeace has come over to help but the power to effect change lies with the people who are willing to take action. That is why I admire Azta Urban Salon for making the brave move of putting out this ad:

The poster has this accompanying blurb:

“The recent oil spill near Guimaras Island could take a year to clean up.

Recent studies however, found that Oil clings to hair in a process known as ADSORPTION, in which the tiny scales on hair snag and hold oil. A pound of quilted hair will adsorb a gallon of oil in two minutes.

Greenpeace, one of the organizations leading in the rescue operations in Guimaras needs to collect as many human hair as they can at the soonest time possible.

Azta Urban Salon is seeking to help this movement by becoming an official collection center of human hair.

You can make a difference by having your haircut at the soonest time possible.

For inquiries, you may get in touch with Jon Bantigue through 0920-9089490.

Azta Urban Salon is located at:

Lest you think it is another foolish plan, read this. Sure, it’s gratuituos plugging but heck, at least they’re trying to do something to save the environment. So if you’re planning to get that haircut any time soon, why don’t you head on over to their salon and donate some of your hair. Should come in handy what with this most recent development in the waters of Subic Bay…

Look! Up In The Sky! It’s A Hoax!

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us
With Pluto having been recently kicked out as a planet from our solar system, I can understand the sudden surge of interest in astronomy. For those of you planning to stay up all night to view what has been purported to be one of the most exciting and spectacular events to happen in the sky in years, well, I’m sorry to burst your bubble as it is not true. Read all about it here.

There is an email circulating in cyberspace (I even got it from 7 friends this month!) saying that the red planet Mars will be exceptionally close today, 27 August (2006). According to one version “It will look like the Earth has two moons!” Once again, this is a good lesson in not believing everything on the Internet. The email is a hoax describing in a somewhat exaggerated fashion the events of 2003.

On August 27, 2003, Mars was only 55.8 million kilometres away – which is almost the closest possible distance it can be from Earth. To the unaided eye, it looked like a shining red beacon while through a telescope, a small red disc could be seen with some dark features visible. Above is a great picture of the planet by the Hubble Space Telescope taken on 27 August 2003. In late August this year (2006) Mars is faint and just visible after sunset low in the western sky. So there!

Feast One Hundred & Eight

Appetizer
If you could have a free subscription to any magazine, which one would you like to have?
Oh no! Just one? Is this a life-time subscription? Well, if I could only really have one, then it would probably have to be Life Magazine. It not only gives such wonderful stories on current events, it also has some of the best pictures ever taken by the most talented photographers.

Soup
Describe your living room (furnishings, colors, etc.).
Our living room is eclectic. It is a mish mash of stuff that was collected by my folks over the years but it has mainly an Asian feel.

Salad
What does the shape of a circle make you think of?

Depends on my mood I guess. Like if I was hungry, it would probably remind me of a cookie. If I was in a reflective mood, maybe it would make me think of the moon. Lol!

Main Course
Name 3 things in your life that you consider to be absolute necessities.

My family, my friends and faith in God. As long as I have those in my life, I will consider myself blessed.

Dessert
What was the last really funny movie you watched?

Just Friends. Ryan Reynolds is a hoot! Alanis Morisette was a fool to let that one get away…

My Very First Thursday Thirteen

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us
Thirteen Things about RIBBITICUS
Since this is going to be my initial post as a Thursday Thirteener, I thought it would be best to give y’all a little backgrounder about myself. Here goes:

1. I am a banker by day, culture vulture by night.
2. I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication Arts yet came to work for a financial institution – go figure!
3. This is my first job straight out of college.
4. I have been with my present employer for the past 12 years.
5. I spend between 12-14 hours at work (which doesn’t leave me a lot of time to have a social life, much less a lovelife – aargh!)
6. I recently got a very tempting (almost irresistible) offer from a rival bank but after much thought and prayers for guidance, I decided to stick it out with my present employer.
7. I don’t know if I will regret the decision later on.
8. I love to watch movies, dine out or just plain hang-out with friends after a hard day’s work.
9. I also like to travel, read a lot, listen to an eclectic collection of music and spend time with my family (and my 2 dogs).
10. Karaoke is my guilty pleasure. (I love it so much I was one of the first members in a popular karaoke joint in Makati and even have my own Magic Mic which has 6 chips that offer about 6,000 songs in its repertoire!)
11. I am also a massage addict – foot reflexology and a combination of Swedish/Shiatsu body massage are guaranteed stress-busters.
12. I have been hooked on blogging ever since my friend,
Jennie, introduced the idea to me way back April of 2004.
13. I have been wanting to be part of Thursday Thirteen for over a year but only got around to actually joining now. (Hope this first post has not been a disappointment.) See you all again next week!
